SEATTLE, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Geovany Soto launched a two-run homer and Mike Napoli added a solo shot in the fourth inning Sunday in the Texas Rangers' 3-2 win over Seattle.
Ryan Dempster (7-2) earned the victory, shutting the Mariners down on six scoreless innings before yielding solo homers to Eric Thames and Brendan Ryan in the seventh.
Mike Adams escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth to preserve the one-run lead and Joe Nathan recorded his 35th save as the American League West-leading Rangers avoided a three-game sweep.
Seattle starter Jason Vargas (14-11) was tagged with the loss after the Rangers scored three runs on eight hits during his six innings.
