Sports Chatter (3-6-13) ? West Life - Serving the Westshore ...

The Westlake Recreation Department will be hosting its annual 3-on-3 "March Madness" youth basketball tournament. This tournament is open to any third- to eighth-grade boy or girl. This is a double-elimination tournament, and will feature separate divisions of boys and girls. Grade divisions will be 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8. Rosters will be limited to four players per team. Games will be played on quarter courts and officiated by certified referees. T-shirts will be awarded to the first-place team in each division. Teams can pick up registration packets, which include all rules, at the Westlake Recreation Center; they are also available online at www.wlrec.org. Teams must register as a whole. No individuals. One payment per team must accompany the registration. Each team must have a parent representative. Girls will be playing on March 21, beginning at 5 p.m. Boys will be playing on March 23, beginning at 10 a.m. Parent representatives will be notified by e-mail of game times. Deadline to register your team is March 16. The cost for rec. member teams (must have at least 2 members) is $60 per team; nonmember, nonresident teams are $70 per team. The Westlake Athletic Development Foundation presents the Demon Green Bash fundraiser March 16 at the St. Demetrios Cultural Center. Tickets are $50 a person for food, drinks, music and more. Bay Village Lacrosse Association (BVLA) will hold its seventh annual fish fryFriday, March 15 from 5-8 p.m. at Bay Middle School , 27725 Wolf Road . Dinner prices are $14 for a fish dinner or $5 for a pizza dinner.?Tickets will be sold at the door.?Event proceeds will help fund the group?s capital equipment drive, support Bay Village boys? and girls? lacrosse programs, and provide lacrosse scholarships to student athletes in need.?The fish dinner includes fried perch or shrimp, fries, coleslaw, roll and a drink.?The pizza dinner includes two slices of pizza, a cookie and a drink.?Baked goods also will be offered for purchase.?Dine-in or carry out is available. Bay Village Lacrosse Association was founded to initiate and support student lacrosse programs.?BVLA currently?offers lacrosse programs to students in third- through- eighth grades and supports the high school programs.?After three years as a club sport at Bay High School , lacrosse became a boys? varsity sport in the 2008-09 school year. In spring 2012, a high school girls? club lacrosse team was initiated. The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking for Cleveland?s unsung hero. The Cavs are searching for that everyday hero who takes pride in his or her community and encompasses the true spirit of ?All for One, One for All.? Fans are invited to nominate someone they know who is deserving of an experience of a lifetime during EveryFAN Night March 20, at 7 p.m., as the Cavs face the defending NBA champion Miami Heat. The EveryFAN will have a night they?ll never forget, tipping off with their own seat on the Cavs bench while the team warms up on the court. During halftime, the honoree will stand center court and be duly recognized among thousands of cheering fans for the significant role they play in making Cleveland great. Following the fourth quarter, they?ll have exclusive access to the Cavs post-game press conference as Coach Scott addresses the media. In addition to the unforgettable in-game experience, the EveryFAN will also receive two premium seats to the March 20 game versus the Miami Heat;?round-trip limousine service; pre-game dinner for two at the Hard Rock Cafe;?a personalized Cavaliers jersey; and a foosball table and fire pit. The?Westlake Recreation Department has openings for the men?s open division in the?spring basketball season. Teams will play 12 games plus playoffs on Sunday nights. Game times will be at 6, 6:50, 7:40 and 8:30 p.m. Entry fee is $350, payable to the city of Westlake, and the forfeit fee is $140, payable to Westlake Umpires. The game fee is $32 per game (cash only). There is a limit of 16 teams, and the deadline to enter teams is March 30. The season begins April 7. The?Westlake Recreation Department has openings for several?adult softball leagues for the 2013 season that will begin in early May. The Monday-Wednesday men?s league plays 18 games from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and the entry fee is $375. The Thursday men?s league plays 18 games (nine double-headers) from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and the entry fee is $375. The Friday coed league plays 18 games (nine double-headers) from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and the entry fee is $375. The Sunday men?s league plays 18 games (nine double-headers) from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the entry fee is $375. The Sunday coed league plays 10 games from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. and the entry fee is $225. Entry fees include all game balls. All teams must pay a $140 forfeit fee in addition to the entrance fee. All nonresidents must also pay a $20 nonresident fee. Game fees are $32. No team will be accepted into the league until entrance and forfeit fees are paid. Contract cards are due by May 4. The mandatory managers meeting will be held at 10 a.m. April 13 in the Westlake Recreation Center?s community rooms. Each team must have a representative at this meeting. Make entry fee payable to the City of Westlake. Make forfeit fee payable to Westlake Umpires. The registration deadline is April 13. Games will start the week of May 5.
