Window-Fix, Inc. - Repair vs. Replace By Harold Kaye

New is not always better:

Having been in the window manufacturing business for over 40 years and having worked with some of the leading window replacement dealers, distributors, and home improvement centers may make it seem sacrilegious to say that replacing your windows is not always the right move. Most window dealers will never tell you this but careful consideration and due diligence should be taken before you decide to tear out the old windows. At the same time, I would not dissuade you from replacing your windows because many times it is the right move.

?

So why this caution? Many times the windows in a home can be refurbished and made to perform almost as well as new windows without the much higher cost and intrusions into the home?s structure ? the cure can be worse than the problem. Changing key components like installing high performance glass, new balances, improved hardware and even structural window parts can resolve the energy loss and operational problems. Significant money will be saved by avoiding structural damage and repairs, re-painting, new wall coverings, and new window decor.

?

A homeowner needs to consult with professionals that don?t only replace windows; if that is the only way they make their money caution is urged. It is imperative that you consult with a company that repairs and replaces windows. This type of company builds long term relationships rather than just a onetime sale. Once you have had an unbiased professional window company inspect your windows and recommend new windows you can get a quote from them and then comparison shop. But keep in mind that the company you hire to replace your windows should be more than just a marketing company that has commission salespeople, casual independent installers, and no real window service capabilities. It is imperative that you visit the company and review their facilities before you sign any contract. Let the buyer beware?new aren?t always better.
