Conference aims

? The aim of the event is to bring together researchers from a wide range of disciplines, interested in: a) examining the nature, scope, and context of abuses of power, both in the Church and beyond; and b) investigating the means by which they may be overcome.

? While the sexual abuse crisis will naturally form a major focus of the conference (and project), this cannot be understood within a vacuum. We are therefore keen to explore all other issues relating to the topic of theology, power, and abuse.

? The conference will identify a number of key themes that will guide and inform the Redeeming Power project over the next two years, leading to a number of events, projects and publications across Europe.

Call for Papers

Significant time has been set aside in the conference schedule for short papers (i.e., 20 mins) and discussion. Established and emerging scholars from a wide range of disciplines ? including, but not limited to, theology, philosophy, psychology, sociology, social work, history, and law (canon and secular) ? are strongly encouraged to consider submitting a proposal.

Abstracts (no more than 250 words) of proposed topics should be sent to Dr Stephen Bullivant at stephen.bullivant@smuc.ac.uk by Friday, 13 July.

Decisions will be communicated by Friday, 20 July.

Facebook's business model just hit a massive stumbling block, as the social network is being forced to let users opt out of having their likenesses repurposed as endorsements in Sponsored Stories ads. Harvin requests trade, skips Vikings practice

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) ? Percy Harvin was nowhere to be found at the Minnesota Vikings' mandatory minicamp practice Wednesday afternoon, and no one seems to know when the star receiver will be back in purple.

Unhappy with several issues with the team that drafted him in the first round in 2009, Harvin requested a trade, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

After participating in a light walk-through practice on Wednesday morning with his teammates, Harvin wasn't present for the full afternoon practice. Head coach Leslie Frazier declined to go into detail on Harvin's absence and said he wasn't sure if one of the team's most important players would be around for the final day Thursday.

"We're going to talk more in detail," Frazier said. "We have a lot of things to talk about."

Vikings GM Rick Spielman said the organization considers Harvin a cornerstone player and will work to resolve any issues that have upset him.

"We have no interest at all in trading Percy Harvin," Spielman said. "We drafted Percy Harvin here. He's a key part of our organization. He's a key part of our football team. Any issues that are out there, or reported, we always handle those internally, and we'll continue to handle those internally."

The situation seemingly came out of nowhere this week, surprising many Vikings players and coaches when Harvin voiced his frustrations with the team Tuesday at the opening of minicamp.

"I just put it this way: There's a lot of different things that have to be sorted out," Harvin said Tuesday. "Just haven't been really happy lately. We've got a couple of things to work on. I'm here in the classroom. We'll go from there."

Harvin declined to go into detail about his grievances. He is due to make $915,000 in the fourth year of a five-year rookie deal. That total is much lower than veterans Michael Jenkins and Jerome Simpson, with neither coming close to his production on the field.

But indications are that Harvin's issues go far deeper than just money. His role in the offense, which diminished greatly last season when the Vikings reached the red zone, and the organization's decision to go into a rebuilding phase coming off of consecutive last-place finishes in the NFC North combined with his modest salary all figure to factor into his mindset.

Requesting a trade now would be a curious move if his main motivation is a new contract. Most players in similar situations first voice their concerns, then threaten to holdout of training camp before going as far as to request a trade.

Harvin did not speak to reporters on Wednesday, but did post a message on his Twitter account.

"Fans I said I have issues to be worked out money not at all being the problem," Harvin wrote...I've (done) everything asked and more..."

Spielman would not say if money was an issue, but also reiterated the organization's approach to signing players to extensions.

"Our philosophy has always been as players enter the last year of their contract we have a history of extending players going into the last year of their contract," Spielman said. "And that's been our history."

Harvin has emerged as perhaps the most versatile and dynamic player on the team. He earned respect in the locker room for his willingness to play through injuries and still produce late in last year's miserable 3-13 season. In May, Harvin showed up at voluntary workouts despite still recovering from shoulder surgery and spoke of asserting himself as a leader and encouraging other players to participate in the team's offseason program.

He caught 87 passes for 967 yards and six touchdowns last season, rushed for another 345 yards and two scores and also returned a kick for a touchdown during a sensational year.

Harvin dealt with migraine headaches and numerous other minor injuries as the result of his punishing style of play, missing one game his rookie season and two in 2010, which brought concerns about his durability over the long term.

He played in all 16 games last season, establishing himself as one of the game's top slot receivers and most dangerous kick returners.

"Percy is a phenomenal player on the field," Spielman said. "And you look at his statistics he had last year and how important he is to this franchise. He's a vital part of us moving forward with this team."

But somewhere between his appearance at team headquarters in May and his return to Minnesota this week, something went wrong for Harvin.

After making the NFC title game as a rookie, the Vikings have taken significant steps backward the last two seasons. They are centering their rebuild on Harvin, Peterson, who is recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee, and second-year quarterback Christian Ponder.

Harvin is far and away Ponder's best option in the receiver corps that includes non-descript veterans Jenkins and Devin Aromashodu, rookie fourth-round picks Jarius Wright and Greg Childs and Simpson, who will be suspended for the first three games this season after being arrested on drug charges while with the Cincinnati Bengals.

After signing tight end John Carlson from Seattle, there has been a lot of talk about the Vikings going to more two tight-end sets to take advantage of him and second-year tight end Kyle Rudolph. That could also be a concern for Harvin, but offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said he was unaware of any problems Harvin had with the playbook. Musgrave said he planned to get the ball to Harvin even more this season.

"We're looking forward to getting him on the field and as an offense we're looking forward to having a better year," Musgrave said. "That's the bottom line."

Peterson said he hadn't spoken to his friend about it but planned to have a conversation to try to help smooth things over.

"I wouldn't say it's distracting. It's more bothering. It's like, we definitely don't want to lose this guy. ... I'm sure the organization will do what it has to do to keep this guy around," Peterson said. "If it was me, I would make sure that we kept him around. But we'll see."

Frazier said the two sides have to get on the same page by the time the team reports to Mankato for camp on July 26.

"Hopefully, we'll be headed in the right direction when we get to training camp and everyone can focus on getting ready for the Jacksonville game," Frazier said. "That's the way it has to be. We can't afford any outside distractions."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Procter & Gamble Co. on Wednesday lowered its fourth-quarter earnings and revenue forecasts, the latest company to sound warning bells about slowing global economic growth.

P&G, which makes an array of everyday goods ranging from Tide detergent to Gillette razors, said it is cutting the forecast because of unfavorable foreign exchange rates, continued slow growth in developed markets and a slowdown of growth in China.

Many U.S. companies have looked to emerging markets as economic growth in North America and Europe has slowed. But P&G's and others' warnings show that expanding abroad is a complicated task for even the largest of companies.

Earlier this month McDonald's said economic volatility, particularly in Asia, is pressuring its second-quarter results. Package delivery company FedEx Corp. on Tuesday said the slowing global economy is expected to crimp its growth over the next 12 months. Its rival UPS in April similarly said slowing Asian shipments hurt quarterly results.

And a wide range of companies including software maker Adobe Systems Inc., medical device maker Synergetics USA and industrial products maker Actuant Inc. have said uncertainty in Europe and slower growth in Asia are hurting.

A few months ago, Europe's economy seemed more positive, Moody's Chief Economist John Lonski said. But that view has darkened in recent months as uncertainty over debt crises in countries such as Spain and Greece dragged on longer than expected. That in turn has led to a slowdown in emerging markets such as Brazil, India and China.

"Global growth is slower than anticipated," he said. "And though it's a stretch to predict the imminence of a global recession, the worldwide slowdown has been great enough to prompt downward revisions of revenue forecasts by multinational corporations."

P&G's cut, announced during a presentation at a Deutsche Bank Global Consumer conference in Paris, is its second in three months. The company is trying to balance growth in emerging markets, which make up about 30 percent of its sales, with the realities of an uncertain global economy and its own executional problems that have led to lackluster market share growth.

Last month P&G said it was rethinking overseas expansion and would focus on its biggest and most profitable markets abroad.

On Wednesday, CEO Bob McDonald reiterated that strategy as well as the company's cost-cutting program, aimed at saving $10 billion by fiscal 2016.

"We are making the necessary adjustments to our growth strategy to increase focus on our core business and to achieve more balanced growth across geographies, product categories and the top and bottom lines," he said in a statement accompanying the presentation.

The world's largest consumer products company said it expects adjusted fourth-quarter earnings between 75 cents and 79 cents per share, down from its previous estimate of 79 cents to 85 cents per share.

Revenue is anticipated to drop 1 percent to 2 percent compared with a prior outlook for a 1 percent to 2 percent increase. The new guidance implies revenue in a range of $20.45 billion to $20.66 billion.

Analysts polled by FactSet foresee earnings of 82 cents per share on revenue of $20.62 billion.

P&G reiterated a plan announced last month that it will prioritize investments in its biggest product innovations, its biggest and most profitable markets and its biggest emerging countries. It also plans to keep investing in new markets.

For fiscal 2013, Cincinnati-based P&G expects adjusted earnings to be up by a mid-to-high single digits percentage rate. The company said it will give an update to the projection when it reports its fiscal 2012 results on Aug. 3.

Its shares fell $2.12, or 3.4 percent, to $60.09, in afternoon trading. Its shares are down 11 percent since peaking for the past year at $67.95 in mid-March. They traded as low as $57.56 last August.

Citi Investment Research analyst Wendy Nicholson said P&G's struggle with market share growth is "discouraging," but said there were some positives in the presentation.

"P&G is clearly saying 'no excuses' and adopting a more aggressive stance about taking responsibility for and fixing their problems," she wrote in a note to investors.

Also on Wednesday, the company reaffirmed its restructuring plan, which involves cutting 5,700 jobs by the end of fiscal 2013 and saving $10 billion by the end of the fiscal 2016.

Like many other consumer products companies, P&G has also been raising prices to deal with higher costs for materials like pulp, fuel and packaging. But in April, P&G said it was rolling back prices in six categories: powdered laundry detergent in the U.S., laundry products in Mexico and the U.K., and North American oral care, dish care and blades and razors. Aside from those categories, other price increases have remained in place.

Ford Hood shooting suspect's beard becomes issue

(AP) FORT WORTH, Texas - The Army psychiatrist charged in the fatal Fort Hood shooting rampage will be barred from the courtroom during his pretrial hearing Tuesday if he hasn't shaved his beard and will be forced to watch the proceedings on closed-circuit television.

Maj. Nidal Hasan surprised the judge earlier this month when he appeared in court with a beard, which violates Army regulations. The judge, who has the power to bar defendants from court for such violations, issued the order and postponed the hearing until Tuesday.

Hasan had been clean-shaven in all other court appearances since the 2009 attack, which killed 13 people and injured more than 30 others on the sprawling Texas military post about 125 miles southwest of Fort Worth. Fort Hood officials wouldn't say Monday whether Hasan would be charged if he shows up unshaven. One possible charge is failure to obey a lawful order or regulation, which carries a maximum two-year jail sentence.

Hasan is an American-born Muslim, and his attorneys have said they would seek an exception based on religious beliefs to the Army's rule.

Since Hasan has been growing the beard just before his scheduled Aug. 20 trial, he may be trying to use the media attention to show that he's being persecuted for his religious beliefs, said Jeff Addicott, a former senior legal adviser to the Army's Special Forces who is not involved in the Hasan case.

"He's going to play the religious card," Addicott, director of the Center for Terrorism Law at St. Mary's University School of Law, said Monday. "And this is his last card to play ... because no one believes he's not going to be found guilty."

Alleged Fort Hood shooter seeks trial delay again
Ft. Hood massacre suspect Nidal Malik Hasan makes first courtroom appearance

Fort Hood spokesman Chris Haug said Monday that post officials wouldn't know until Tuesday whether he had followed the judge's order. He couldn't provide details on the closed-circuit TV and whether anyone in court would be able to see Hasan.

Hasan, 41, is paralyzed from the waist down after being shot by police the day of the rampage. He remains jailed.

"I don't think he has to rely on a beard to show that he's being treated unfairly," Hasan's former lead attorney John Galligan said, noting previous court rulings against Hasan.

Galligan, who hasn't spoken to Hasan in months, said he doesn't know why Hasan is growing the bead and declined comment on what Hasan had said about his religion.

The judge, Col. Gregory Gross, is expected to consider several motions Tuesday, including whether to delay Hasan's military trial until December. The trial already has been postponed from March and then June, as defense attorneys said they needed more time to prepare.

Hasan faces the death penalty if convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder. The trial is expected to last at least two months, and the military jury will be brought in from Fort Sill, Okla.

Witnesses have said that on the morning of Nov. 5, 2009, a gunman wearing an Army combat uniform opened fire after shouting "Allahu Akbar!" ? or "God is great!" in Arabic ? in a Fort Hood medical building where deploying and returning soldiers received vaccines and other tests. Several witnesses identified the gunman as Hasan, who was scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan the following month.

A Senate report released last year said the FBI missed warning signs about Hasan, who the report said had become an Islamic extremist and a "ticking time bomb" before the rampage.

U.S. officials have said they believe Hasan's attack was inspired by the radical U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, and that Hasan and the cleric exchanged as many as 20 emails. Al-Awlaki was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen last fall. His name has not yet been mentioned in any hearings in Hasan's case.

Chris Brown, Drake Bar Brawl: Australian Tourist Cracks Head Open After Caught In Crossfire (VIDEO)

As police try to piece together who started the Chris Brown and Drake bar brawl Wednesday night, a victim caught up in the crossfire has taken to YouTube to complain about her injuries, reports Channel News 7.

"The reason why I have 16 stitches on my head, on my face is because of some stupid famous people having a fight over a girl," Hollie C., the Australian tourist on vacation in New York, said in a video clip on YouTube.

A shared love interest with Rihanna reportedly triggered the feud between the two musicians.

After Hollie C. was treated for her injuries, the 24-year-old was released from hospital on Thursday morning where she spent seven hours in the emergency room, according to TMZ and the Herald Sun.

"I had to take the subway home with no money or jacket. Nobody would even sit beside me. My friends were so scared because they did not know where I was," Hollie C. told TMZ.

Since Hollie C's YouTube clip, another innocent bystander from the bar brawl has also come forward.

According to TMZ and PerezHilton, 21-year-old Veronica, plans to sue after sustaining injuries to her head and hands.

For a minute there, we thought we had traveled in time to 2013. We turned on the TV at 1:45 p.m. ET to watch President Obama's big economic speech, and there was President Romney instead. But it turned out Obama was just late, so that Candidate Romney took the opportunity to go first.

Obama seemed to think he had gone back in time to 2008. As everyone expected, he spent much of the speech blaming George W. Bush for America's economic troubles. Presumably he took encouragement from a new Gallup poll released this morning: "Americans continue to place more blame for the nation's economic problems on George W. Bush than on Barack Obama, even though Bush left office more than three years ago."

The watercress has finally arrived in Caviston?s, one of our favourite vegetable shops. The seasons seem to be all out this year and we can?t predict when produce will be there and at it?s freshest. The bags you buy in supermarkets just don?t taste like the real thing at all so catch it while you can as it mightn?t be here for long!

This soup can be on the table under 10 minutes if you want. We love asian soups as they have great depth of flavour and really zing with freshness.

Hot and Sour Watercress and Prawn Soup ? to serve 2?

• 3 tbsp rice vinegar (or white wine vinegar)
• 500ml vegetable or chicken stock
• 1 tbsp soy sauce
• 1tsp golden caster sugar
• 2.5cm piece ginger, peeled and thinly sliced
• 3 scallions, thinly sliced
• 300g raw peeled prawns
• 1 bunch watercress, stalks cut off

Put all the ingredients except for the prawns and watercress into saucepan and bring to a simmer.

Cook for a minute, then add the prawns and cook until they turn pink.

Stir in the watercress and take off the heat. Taste and add another teaspoon of sugar if necessary.

Drink with:?a non-Burgundy Pinot but not from a hot climate. We tried one from San?Gimignano in Tuscany?which had lovely juicy fruit but was still nice and light without too much tannin which tends to clash badly with chilli. A surprisingly good choice and one that will be repeated.

Shale Energy Update: New Ohio Energy Bill Includes Horizontal Drilling Provisions

Overview

On June 11, 2012, Ohio Governor John Kasich signed Senate Bill 315, which requires operators to provide detailed disclosures regarding horizontal drilling operations in the Utica shale.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) describes this landmark bill as one of the nation's toughest regulatory frameworks for overseeing the new technologies that allow for the exploration of natural gas and liquids in deep shale rock formations. The ODNR touts this legislation as the nation's first combined well construction and hydraulic fracturing chemical disclosure requirement.

Among other requirements, the bill mandates that oil and gas drillers identify the source of the water used in the fracturing of wells, provide the rate and volume at which they will withdraw the water and disclose the chemicals used in the fracturing process to the ODNR's Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management. As part of this disclosure, well operators must provide a well completion record and, if applicable, the trade name and total volume of all product fluids and substances used to facilitate the drilling of any portion of a well. The bill includes protections for trade secrets.

For new horizontal wells, the bill requires well operators to take pre-drilling well water samples for all wells within 1,500 feet of a proposed horizontal well and disclose the results in their permit applications.

Additionally, the bill directs owners of horizontal wells to obtain liability insurance coverage of at least $5 million to pay for injuries or property damage caused by production operations in Ohio. This increases the typical required coverage for horizontal wells by five times in rural areas and nearly doubles the requirement in urban areas. A "reasonable level of coverage" must be available for environmental liability, including pollution and contamination occuring as a result of the drilling, operation or plugging of the owner's wells.
