PFT: Year-round Adderall ban makes no sense

Mike Munchak, Chris Palmer, Bruce MatthewsAP

Chris Palmer might not have called effective plays for the Titans offense this season, but he?s at least an efficient shopper.

Asked about his reaction to being fired last night, Palmer said he played the role of Santa Claus, handing Titans head coach Mike Munchak a gift and going on his way.

?I gave him his Christmas present, said Merry Christmas, and then left,?? Palmer told Jim Wyatt of the Tennesseean. ?There was nothing I could do at that point. The decision was made. I said, ?OK? And I just left it at that.?

Palmer wasn?t pleased with the decision ??Who ever is when they?re fired? ? but didn?t appreciate the idea he was to blame for the Titans struggles, with second-year quarterback Jake Locker fighting through injuries and a group of young players in a transitional phase.

The Titans rank 24th in total offense, and a loss to the Jaguars was apparently too much to bear without offering someone up.

?I think when you break a quarterback in, you are going to be in a situation where you are going to have your ups and downs,?? Palmer said. ?Young quarterbacks, you have to go through this period. They just don?t step in and become great quarterbacks. It takes time to develop. And [wide receiver] Kenny Britt is not 100 percent. I just think there?s more issues than people want to admit to.

?Is it an easy process? No, it is not an easy process. It is something you just have to get through.

?But I wish them luck. . . . I respect those guys on the staff. Several of them are my friends and I hope it all works out for them. They have families and children, and I hope it works out for them.?

Asked about his replacement, quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains, Palmer was as diplomatic as possible.

?I thought he was doing a good job this year,?? Palmer said. ?Munch has known him for a longer period of time and they have a good feel for each other. But the issues are still there. I wish him luck.?

That?s the proverbial lump of coal in the stocking on his way up the chimney.

Battling for life, freedom and independence after cancer | The ...

Like many who wage battle, Zach Graas fights for freedom and independence.

But his battlefield is empty hospital hallways and the hollow, piercing sound of an MRI machine. His enemy: the dozens of pills he swallows daily.

Zach has one word to describe the cancer that has invaded his 19-year-old brain: ?frustrating.?

His fight started last September during his freshman year at the University. In the shower, his right hand went numb. The numbness persisted; Zach stumbled to his bed.

?I just thought, ?Shit, this is not okay?,? Zach said.

After an overnight trip to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, a CT scan and an MRI, Zach knew he had a partial simple seizure, but he would not learn he had fibrillary astrocytoma, a series of brain tumors, until a month later.

?My mom told me,? Zach said. ?She was crying, so I knew it was cancer. I felt disappointed. It was literally the worst possible outcome.?

From there, doctors wheeled him in for surgery; then a year full of chemotherapy and pills began. He took five chemo pills every 23 days for 12 months, in addition to nearly 12 seizure-prevention pills every day.

Zach said chemo wasn?t so bad. Despite feeling tired and nauseous, it was the surgeries and MRI scans that got him at first.

?I remember being little and thinking the brain was just the scariest thing,? Zach said. ?We saw pictures of the MRI machines in school, and I was so freaked out.?

Listening to Tupac during MRIs helped, but Zach said the best remedy is a change in mindset.

?I was really reckless before, and carelessly free,? Zach said, recalling a time he sped his Mustang into a tree. ?Now it?s about wanting everyday, and wanting to make it better than the one before.?

Eventually his right hand became worse, he writes and types with three fingers.

A recent MRI showed he needs a tumor resection surgery, in which surgeons will try and remove the cancerous cells while restoring the movement back to his right hand, which he can?t lie flat. To perform the surgery, doctors need Zach to be awake so he can move his right arm. That way, Zach says, they won?t get any of the good cells.

When he found out the chemo did not completely destroy the tumors, his family accompanied him to the MRI, and so did Rachel Forrest, a friend and junior from Edmond, OK.

When the results showed the cancer was not gone, Rachel wanted to use her skills to help. A painting and art history major, Rachel began organizing an auction to raise money.

?I don?t like to think about the numbers,? Zach said. ?I know my prescriptions alone are in the thousands.?

In addition to the co-pays, and the flight Zach and his family will have to make to the University of California, San Francisco for his December surgery.

Zach helped Rachel move over the summer, despite the heat and not having complete use of his right hand.

?I couldn?t have done that on my own,? Rachel said. ?He?s helped for nothing, so I wanted to help.?

The silent auction will be part of Final Fridays in the Alton Ballroom at Pachamama?s, 800 New Hampshire St., from 5 to 9 p.m.

More than 30 pieces of art have been donated from University students, graduates, faculty and other artists in the community.

Rachel expects to be anxious the day of Zach?s surgery as she awaits word from his mother.

?I know I?ll be nervous,? Rachel said. ?It helps that Zach is so chill about it.?

If the surgery goes well, Zach hopes his battle will be over, and he will eventually throw away the pill bottles that surround him, though the MRI machine will be a familiar former-foe in the months following.

?I want to be independent again,? Zach said. ?It?s annoying to be so dependent on the medicine, the doctors and to need my brother around just in case.?

Old Japanese Architecture: Buy it to Save It ? Real Estate Japan ...

The market for historic homes in Tokyo attracts a fair amount of foreign buyers these days. Japanese buyers tend to choose modern homes so the market for traditional houses is driven by buyers from overseas.

According to Ken Arbour, president of Century 21 SKY Realty, a Tokyo-based real estate agency, anyone buying a house that is over 30 years in Tokyo is expected to do one thing: renovate. Some of the historic homes in Japan, which are more than 40 years old, exist in central Tokyo.

However, there are a few Japanese who still want to preserve the beauty of postwar Japanese architecture.

Toshiko Kinoshita, an architect in Tokyo, together with her husband, Juan Ordonez, came up with a unique preservation tactic. They decided to buy a classic postwar architecture in her neighborhood which was also likely to face demolition. They also organized a temporary exhibition at a gallery in Denenchofu, in southwest Tokyo, to showcase three properties that are up for sale, and match them to buyers who appreciate historically and culturally important houses. Though the exhibition ended without a sale, the couple says that they are hoping that their move would serve as a starting point to raise awareness on the difficulty of preserving Japanese architecture.

Outside Tokyo, Sotheby?s International Realty is looking to sell two traditional houses, one in Kyoto which is more than 50 years old and one in Kamakura built in 1972. Yukiko Takano of Sotheby?s commented that foreigners are more appreciative of old traditional houses in the area and are far more knowledgeable about Japanese architecture and landscape than the Japanese.

American developer, Jacob Reiner is also into the trend, revamping neglected houses for international buyers. Together with his team at Eden Homes, they refurbish kominka (traditional houses) in Shojiko, a lakeside village and one of the remaining undeveloped areas around Mount Fuji. Their company used to buy old houses, fix them and resell. However, he now prefers to sell houses that haven?t been modernized. He says that through this, they are able to encourage people to design their own homes and support them with planning and construction while preserving their historical and cultural value.

    Ashley Rindsberg: Feminizing Israel

Last week, Israel's Academy of the Hebrew Language made an interesting ruling, reported today by Haaretz (in Hebrew), which stated that titles of official government positions can and should be described with the feminine form of the relevant noun when a given position is held by a woman.

Until now there was some confusion, since unlike English every noun in Hebrew takes either a male or female gender form. So, for example, in the term, "head-of-government," which is the literal Hebrew translation of prime minister, the word "head" must be either masculine or feminine.

It's been unclear whether the noun representing the official position should refer to the person holding it, which would make the noun female if a woman were in office, or to the position itself, which would depend on the inherent gender of the word referring to the position. Golda Meir's Hebrew Wikipedia entry, for example, describes Israel's fourth prime minister as head of government in the male form.

But with this ruling Israel's next female prime minster, as well as any woman holding an official title of any kind, will be described in the feminine. It might seem a bit academic, but it's actually a significant point.

The Academy of Hebrew Language, which was created by the Israeli government in 1953, plays a mixed role as a descriptive and prescriptive body. In its latter role as grammarian, the Academy, among other duties, derives correct Hebrew words for new objects or ideas, like a recently created Hebrew word that denotes the single from a music album, which the Academy created by combining the Hebrew words for "song" and "new." (Though most Israelis still use the English "single," they just say it with a Hebrew pronunciation, "Seengel.")

But in other cases, the Academy defers to common usage, which means that it legitimizes previously incorrect words that have taken hold so extensively that denying their usage would be akin to...well, to the Acad?mie fran?aise's sometimes overly rigid insistence on correct French usage. (The French Acad?mie has for years fought calls to feminize titles of office held by women, as one example.)

But with Israel's first female prime minister, Golda Meir, having held that office more than 40 years ago, and with the previous president of the Israeli Supreme Court a woman, as well as the previous head of the opposition (and former foreign minister) and head of the Labor party both women, it seems clear in which direction the role of gender in Israeli public life is headed.

Contradicting the much beloved meme about flagging women's rights in Israel, the trend in mainstream life in Israel is moving in favor of women. It's true that in sectors like the ultra-Orthodox community women are still at a serious disadvantage when it comes to public life. Though with the enormous success of ultra-Orthodox Israeli filmmaker Rama Burshtein's recent film, this tide also seems to be turning.

Back to the Academy, the decision to feminize all official titles reveals the extent to which common usage (i.e. public opinion) and official attitudes on the topic are coalescing. It might not be a front-page headline, but it does indicate the depth of the change and, amid all the challenges both in Israel and in the region, a model for progress.
